January Birthstone: Garnet

Born in January? Garnet is your birthstone, a gem that can be found around the world with over 20 species.

Most garnet is found near the Earth’s surface, formed when a sedimentary rock with a high aluminum content is subjected to heat and intense pressure. It can also be found in rocks of contact metamorphism, subsurface magma chambers, lava flows, deep-source volcanic eruptions and the soils and sediments formed when garnet-bearing rocks erode.

The word garnet originates from the Latin word granum, meaning ‘grain’. This refers to the roundish shape of the crystals and suggests the similarities between the gem and the seeds of a ripe pomegranate. Though garnets are generally thought of as the dark red gem, it can actually be a wide range of colors.

Garnet is generally classified into five species:
  • Pyrope (Ranges from purple to orangey red)
  • Almandine (Purple to orangey red)
  • Spessartine (Oranges and yellows)
  • Grossularite (Colorless to yellow, reddish orange and vibrant green)
  • Andradite (Yellow and yellowish green)

Sometimes garnets are mixtures of these species, meaning the gem could be green, yellow, orange, red, purple and various combinations of these hues.

Symbolically, garnets are known to be energizing and revitalizing. It is said to be stabilizing in a chaotic situation. It is also known to be a protective stone.
