Watch Movement 101

Watch Movement 101

Beyond the sleek face of a luxury timepiece lies a system of mechanics that generates the life flow of a watch—the movement. A sophisticated system of technological components works together to power your watch. This internal mechanism of the clock, also known as a caliber, commands the performance of a smooth operation and precise timekeeping. Often described as the heartbeat of a watch, the movement is an important aspect to consider when purchasing a luxury timepiece. Read below to discover the different watch movements and how each differs from one another.

Characteristics of Manual Watches

As the most fundamental type of watch movement, manual watches are a part of the mechanical watch variety and require hand-winding. Mechanical timepieces have been perfected by watchmakers since the 16th century, and intricate manual movements are considered a marvel of engineering, celebrated in the eyes of watch collectors.

Keep in mind manual watches must be wound properly either daily or weekly depending on the model. Before winding the crown, users should remove the watch from their wrist. The key is to wind the dial on the side of the case until a tightness is felt. The mainspring holds potential energy that powers the internal mechanism over time. If the crown is wound past this point, the internal mobility may be harmed.

Characteristics of Automatic Watches

Automatic watches also feature a mechanical movement, however, they are self-winding and do not require as much daily maintenance. Automatic movements function in the same way as manual movements, except they are powered by kinetic energy rather than manually winding the crown. The rotor rotates and transmits energy to automatically wind the mainspring while the watch is worn. The ease of use makes this type of watch movement extremely popular and customers can find the widest selection of mechanical watches available with automatic movements. Remember, if an automatic watch has not been worn frequently, it may require manual winding to regain accurate timekeeping.

Characteristics of Quartz Watches

A modern development, the quartz movement is now found in the majority of today's timepieces. What is the mechanism of a quartz movement? A battery sends an electrical current through the small quartz crystal, which warms it up and causes a vibration (33 times per second) that keeps the movement moving. Quartz movements are a good choice for the typical watch consumer since they are simple to use and reliable at a reasonable price. Quartz movements, unlike mechanical movements, do not require frequent hand-winding. Instead, the only maintenance needed is to replace the battery, which is usually every 2-3 years.
